Round Lake Area Park District announces plans for inclusive playground

Families invited to free superhero event Sept. 9

The Round Lake Area Park District is celebrating the announcement of plans for a new, universally inclusive playground with a special event the evening of Friday, Sept. 9.

A Superhero Training and Movie night will be held from 6-9 pm Friday, Sept. 9, at the Sports Center, 2004 Municipal Way in Round Lake Beach. From 6-7 pm, the Park District will have Superhero Training Stations where you can design your Super Costume; contribute to our Hero Wall; and work on your Super Speed, Super Smarts and more. After that, you can learn about the District’s amazing, upcoming Hero Park project. And then settle in with a snack to watch "The Incredibles." (Please bring chairs, blankets, etc. to watch the movie picnic-style.)

The event is free, no registration is required, and it is open to all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult.)

The Round Lake Area Park District is planning to build Hero Park at 2041 Orchard Lane in Round Lake Beach, near its current Special Recreation building. Hero Park will be a 100% universally inclusive playground that will be one of the largest of its kind in Lake County. The District is working on the project with Unlimited Play, an award-winning nonprofit organization that builds universally inclusive playgrounds to promote health and wellness and to change communities by providing freedom of play for all children.

“This playground will create a safe and inclusive environment for our entire community to play together,” said Katie Gamroth, Director of Operations and Recreation. It truly will be a place where everyone is welcome and will feel like they belong.

Hero Park will feature ramps from bottom to top; transfer stations throughout; specialized seating and handholds; slanted/graduated climbing elements; high back swings; stainless steel and molded slides; musical elements; parallel play; lots of shade; fun, educational play panels; and more.
