For young and old alike! The Round Lake Area Park District offers many forms of dance including ballet, tap and jazz. Our experienced instructors tailor the program toward skill development, socialization, and a group dance experience where every dancer excels. The dance year concludes with an annual spring recital. Please Note: You must register in person for all dance classes. No online registration is available.

Music & Voice Lessons

Guitar Stars, Beginner Guitar I (ages 7-13) - No previous knowledge of guitar necessary. The children will learn the fundamentals of guitar playing, including holding the guitar and pick, proper fret-hand finger position, sight reading, playing by ear, and playing basic songs. Each child will receive a participation award and guitar-related prizes. A guitar book is included in course fee. Classes are held at the Robert W. Rolek Community Center. Guitar is required for class. If you need information on purchasing a guitar, call John Suits at 773-286-2941.

Private Piano Instruction (ages 7-12) - The RLAPD offers piano lessons for beginning, former or continuing students who wish to build their skills. Once registered, your instructor will contact you to set up your lesson. Classes fill based on availability. Registration deadline is one week prior. Session 1 runs Tu/Th, Feb. 14 - March 23. Session 2 runs Tu/Th, April 4 - May 23. Lessons will be scheduled between 6:00 and 8:00 pm, based on instructor and student schedules. Band Opportunities
The Round Lake Area Community Band (performing more than 40 years) play at various venues/locations throughout the area. Membership is available to high school age musicians or older, including those who want to restart their playing. Come join this group and enjoy its welcoming, relaxed atmosphere and many performance opportunities. All concert band instruments are welcome!

No auditions necessary! Rehearsals take place on Tuesday nights: Concert Band from 7:00-8:40 pm, and Jazz Ensemble from 8:50-9:30 pm. Starting in October, we will be meeting the band room at Round Lake High School: 800 N. High School Drive in Round Lake. To join, stop by any rehearsal or call Bill Zeigler at 847-265-8215 for more information.


Paul Hefner, Community Band Director

Trained in music education and performance, along with 11 years of college teaching experience, Paul Hefner brings the highest level of quality to performance and instruction. He also has completed his Master's study in Business Administration. His extensive knowledge of classical and jazz literature is incorporated into his playing and instruction. Paul's music work often includes judging Jr. High and High School solo and ensemble contests as well as band, orchestra, and jazz contests.

Paul is a member of the FullScore Chamber Orchestra where he is principal trombone. He is on the artistic advisory board for the music non-profit Young At Heart. His performance ensembles (Antioch Brass Ensembles), consists of a variety of groups performing at special events in the Illinois and Wisconsin areas.

Teaching at the Music Institute of Chicago, Paul is privileged to conduct the New Horizons Band, focusing on bringing the band to performance level with new repertoire for multiple concerts each season. In addition, he directs the Round Lake Community Band and is an active conductor for the College of Lake County summer musical orchestra. He free-lances often conducting various community bands and orchestras in the area.

My favorite is how it can bring a diverse group of people together to share the same passion and accomplish the same goal; making great music and having fun doing it! My goal is promote this diverse collaboration. My hope is to pass on a legacy that brings people of many backgrounds together for the same purpose.”
