Last month, your Round Lake Area Park District passed an ordinance making all Park District grounds tobacco free starting August 1, 2010. Renwood Golf Course is exempt in most areas, but the driving range and 30 feet within the first tee will also be tobacco free zones. The tobacco litter and survey data were collected by teens in the Lake County chapter of a tobacco prevention group known as REALITY Illinois. Hoping to make a positive impact on their community, 22 teens from 6 different schools throughout the county came together twice a month for over a year to work on this project. After REALITY Illinois presented their information at a RLAPD Board meeting in April, the commissioners were convinced. Not only did they make RLAPD parks smoke-free, but they decided to take it a step further and be the first in the state to make their parks tobacco-free.
